Viggle: Hi Russell! Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to explore AI tools in filmmaking?

Russell Johnson: My background is in VFX and post-production, but I’ve always been interested in pushing the boundaries of storytelling with new technology—whether it’s VR, AR, or AI.

When DALL-E and early versions of Runway started emerging, I was immediately intrigued. The ability to create high-quality visuals without traditional studio budgets was a game-changer.

The real shift came when I saw more individuals producing their own content. Many people and businesses used to think that professional-grade video production was out of reach, but tools like Viggle have made it more accessible than ever.

Even for professionals, at the very least, Viggle provides a powerful tool for previsualization, allowing for better control and efficiency in planning complex shots.

Viggle: How did you use Viggle in your recent project?

Russell: My main project was a music video based on a live musical I had written, inspired by a children’s book. I thought Project Odyssey would be the perfect space to experiment with it.

I approached it just like traditional filmmaking but integrated AI tools to enhance the process:

  1. Casting & Character Development: I designed the characters using Freepik.
  2. World-Building: I used Kling and Final Cut for the backgrounds.
  3. Animation & Motion Capture: I explored Viggle’s template catalog to find pre-existing dance moves that matched my vision.
  4. Custom Motion Capture: I also recorded my own movements and used Viggle’s green screen feature to bring them to life.
  5. Facial Performance: Runway Act One helped me fine-tune expressions.

Viggle completely changed my original workflow, making it faster and more dynamic than I had planned.

Viggle: What’s your outlook on AI and its role in creative work?

Russell: I’ve been amazed at how fast AI has evolved, and I’ve become a huge advocate for its use in filmmaking and storytelling.

The biggest misconception is that AI replaces creativity—but that’s not true. AI doesn’t replace human ingenuity; it enhances it. These tools help us accomplish tasks that were previously impossible or prohibitively expensive.

For example, I’ve never animated characters before, but with AI, I now have the ability to bring my ideas to life without an entire production team.

This is just the beginning—AI tools like Viggle are unlocking new creative possibilities for independent creators, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next!
